The Maine Coon breed originated in the State of Maine in the USA, hence the first part of the name. The second part comes from their bushy tail, reminiscent of a racoon's tail. Legend has it that the first pair were brought from France as a gift from Marie Antoinette.
They were originally bred to keep barns and farmyards free from rodent pests, but their beauty and temperament have since made them a sought after pet. One of their most remarkable features is their large size - they are the largest breed of domestic cat. Males can reach as much as 12kg. They have long fine hair and come in a multitude of colors and markings.
